The environmental zone of Antwerp

Since 01.02.2017, the city of Antwerp has introduced a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) in the entire city center as well as in part of the city district Linkeroever. The entry restrictions of the LEZ will be gradually tightened. In the first stage between 2017 and 2020, vehicles with high pollutant levels will no longer be permitted to enter the environmental zone.

The LEZ boundaries of Antwerp include the city center of Antwerp as well as a part of the city district Linkeroever (between the E17, the Park & Ride Linkeroever and the Sint-Annabos). The environmental zone covers 20 km² and affects about 200.000 inhabitants.

The LEZ of Antwerp is permanent, that means 24 hours a day for 7 days a week, also on Sundays and public holidays. The LEZ regulates the entry for all vehicle categories, except for mopeds and motorcycles. The vehicles of category M (passenger cars, minibuses, buses and coaches), the vans of category N (goods transport) and the agricultural and forestry tractors of the category T are affected.

In the first stage between 2017 and 2019, this results in an entry restriction for petrol vehicles with EURO emission standard 0 as well as for diesel vehicles with EURO emission standards 0 to 3. Diesel vehicles with EURO emission standards 0 to 3 may temporarily enter the zone with an environmental ticket. Mopeds and motorcycles of the category L are not affected by the entry restrictions.

Vintage vehicles under 40 years are not permitted to enter the zone. An environmental ticket has to be purchased for vintage vehicles over 40 years. Vehicles (domestic) of disabled people are granted special permits.

In 2020 until 2025, the entry restrictions of the environmental zone will be further tightened and divided in two stages in order to improve the air quality of the city.
The compliance check of this regulation is carried out by ANPR cameras.
The vehicle types, the EURO emission standards and the registration classes which are allowed to enter the LEZ of Antwerp, can be found under the Sticker for Antwerp menu item.
